Happy, Healthy Body – Benefits of Foam Rolling
A couple years back I heard about the amazing benefits of foam rolling from my personal trainer friend. She would have all her clients use a foam roller to warm up their muscles before their workout with her. I did some research of my own and ordered my own online. I must confess, I haven’t used it nearly as much as I originally intended too. Recently, I have had some aches, pains and muscle tightness that caused me to seek the help of a massage therapist. I am now recommitted to incorporate foam rolling into my weekly routine and intend to use it on a more regular basis.
I found an informative article to share with you about the many benefits of foam rolling by Dr. Axe. He explains, “foam roller exercises, also called myofascial release, is a form of massage that fitness-minded folks do either before exercise to loosen up sore muscles and tight joints, or after a workout, in an effort to aid muscle recovery. Rolling yourself out on a foam roller becomes an affordable alternative to massage therapy. Those dense, round pieces of foam can deliver many benefits of therapeutic massage without the cost”.
Dr. Axe listed five health benefits of foam rolling. 1. Improved flexibility and increased joint range of motion. 2. Better circulation. 3. Stress reduction. 4. Reduce exercise related soreness. 5. Prevent injury.
I remember I watched a few quick videos on how to effectively use the foam roller on YouTube. My personal trainer friend said not to stress too much as there’s not really a wrong way to use it. My experience was that it was not only easy to use, but very effective at isolating and targeting my sore muscles. Listen to your body. Oh, and don’t forget to breath!
